I am not a Marketing Expert , but I seriously thinks that Google deserves better marketing. They have better products with best engineering and good designs, and still they are often behind other services in user base. Even for their flagship product , Google Search , they are having little marketing. Just search for the term ‘Search’ on Google Search. Most of us will think about Google just when some one mentions about the term Search. And google thinks of it only after six other search services!

May be due to the complexity of the algorithm , they cant alter the result for pushing google up , or it may be against their terms. Still, I think the service which is used by the majority must come to the top in search. Even in the advertisement they are not showing up. May be , they are confident about their product. And everyone must agree to that in the case of Searching.

Now, check Orkut or the recent Lively. Why Google didnt want to push Orkut in US or UK which for sure , will be a much better market than India or Brazil. They waited till Facebook took over these market completely and concentrated on India and Brazil. Same is the case in Email. When Gmail was introduced as a invitation only beta service in 2004, I instantly gave up Yahoo mail and shifted to Gmail because of the simplicity and innovative and easy user interface,  and it was free. If there was a better marketing , Gmail should have been the most used Email service , which is now in third position after Yahoo Mail and Hotmail (Live). Currently Gmail have only one third user base of Yahoo or Hotmail which is very bad , as Gmail is free and much much better. Look at Lively , which is ofcourse not the best in the pool , but with a little more development and marketing , it can create some movement. Froogle (Google Product Search)and Google Code are another examples.

In my opinion , only product which got the best marketing was Adsense and Adwords , which became an instant success.
